VOLUNTEER DOULA OPPORTUNITY Organization : Dar a Luz Honduras Website: darlaluzhonduras.wordpress Location: Honduras An opportunity to work internationally and improve your skills, while providing much needed services in hopes to empower birthing women in Honduras. Dar a Luz Honduras is a non-profit grassroots organization founded by Silvia Bahr. Before Silvia, Doula support did not exist in Honduras. Dar a Luz aims at improving maternal and infant health, and more importantly create awareness and change in labor and delivery in the public hospitals. We also focus to empower the traditional midwives in the country side. Volunteers are needed in many different settings throughout the country, in both rural and urban areas. Volunteer positions may include supporting women laboring in public hospitals, offering education to medical students and medical staff in hospitals and universities, giving childbirth and general education to women in hogares maternos, women’s groups, health care centers and regional hospitals, or collaborating with traditional midwives in rural areas. What you bring: Labor support in the public hospital setting includes emotional, physical and informational support during and after the birthing process. Experienced volunteer doulas will have the opportunity to practice their skills, and deepen their ability to provide empathy, compassion and respect for birthing mothers. Being an emotionally supportive presence is the most important quality volunteers can offer; the qualities of an open and caring presence can profoundly affect a women’s experience. If you are fluent in Spanish it will make your stay in Honduras a little more comfortable, but Spanish skills are not needed. Spanish classes can be arranged at a nominal cost, and will teach the basics for effective communication during your time in Honduras. When and where: There are a variety of opportunities across Honduras throughout the year. How we’ll support you: We will assess your level of experience and create a unique volunteer placement based on your skills and language proficiency. We will assist in preparation for your volunteer work through cultural sensitivity preparation/training. We will support your travel preparations, pick up from bus station and orientation to your volunteer location. A comfortable and safe home stay will be arranged. To assist in the work we will provide a Honduran pre-paid cell phone to use during your time as a volunteer. Good to know: This work can be emotionally fulfilling and draining and requires a high level of inspiration along with the ability to work independently. Your efforts will be met with enormous gratitude from the laboring women and their families. What’s the cost: There will be a nominal fee, which also covers your accommodation. Volunteers are responsible for covering their own transportation to and from Honduras. If this sounds like a position for you: further detailed information on the volunteer positions and application will be provided.
