Vanessa German Jordan Miles trial update. i left the courtroom at 2:40pm. after lunch the trial began again at about 1:10pm. immediately after the judge spoke that the court was in session the defense requested an immediate side bar. the white noise was turned on for approximately 8 minutes. it felt like a long time. it seemed like there was an argument, or very expressive gestures between the judge and Jordans attorney. lots of head shaking and arms waving. session came back in. jordan completed his testimony taking us through his trip to the hospital. to his present life and the continued difficulties he has with his short term memory. he was asked when the last time he played music. and what he believes will be possible for his life. if he feels he will be able to move forward. he says. yes. this is his goal. 2pm the cross examination begins. the tone in the courtroom shifts dramatically and argumentatively. the defense attorney was admonished several times to allow jordan to actually respond to the questions he was asking. within the first 15 minutes at least 8 interruptions and insistence that the defense attorney not be argumentative and more legal speak for stop yelling at the witness, stop interrupting the witness, stop inferring evidence to the witness. this attorney raised his voice. everything was a word dissection. you thought, or you saw, or you believed it was the driver who jumped on your back? which was it? and so on. about everything. lines of questioning: pictures of jordans body bare chest were shown. emphasis on the images being posted on facebook. why did he do no homework the night of the beating. why was he just playing video games. did he go out on a date the night of his birthday. what kind of student goes to the movies after school. you want us to believe you were an honor student and you did no homework after school. theres more. here are larger impressions i left with: how is an all white jury representative of the population of our county? the images of jordans naked torso prior to his beating were used for........? the most attentive everyone, including the judge and jury, got was when jordan actively described the beating. there is one juror who never looks at jordan at all. when i left the benches were full. a full row of attorney supports behind the 3 officers. i know theyre attorneys because they were on their cell phones, and only attorneys were allowed cell phones. it was contentious and aggressive when i left. the air was charged. and cold. thats all for now. they judge did make a joke yesterday about not being able to grow his own set of dred locks. and today he made a joke about what Jordan would think if he know that he, the judge could play Chopin in e-- something like that. thats all for now.
