[Various letters related to a company formed by John W. Holmes (1821-1883) in the early part of 1861. He, and others, tried unsuccessfully to get arms from the state for the company. They never received them and the company was never mustered into state service. Many of the men went on to join other companies. Holmes was a being slightly presumptuous by organizing the company so early. The State of Georgia seceded in late January and most of the State Regiments were not mustered into service until April of 1861.] Hiwassee Sunday morning Jany the 27 / 61 Dear Sir my friend Col. Jameson has rote you a letter in regard to my case about armes for a company I have raised and organized in towns County. I have had great deal of opposition and hav been accused of being disonist and Every hard Saying in regard to the whole movement. The bell and duglass part sais we cant get armes that they dont Know us mountain boomers: now I am able to give Solvent Security for 50,000 dollars any day and if I get armes I want the best that can be had as I Know if there is a call for troops to defend our Country the wool hat hard fisted mountain boyes is the ones has it to do and if I Should be cauld on I would like to be prepared to obay the call and be an honor to the mountains, I am ready and willing to give good bond and Security for the armes and pay all cost required of me for Shiping. I am prepared to make a Solvent Bond any time when the blank is Sent me if we get the armes I want them shiped to Athens geo to J. W. Holmes and a blank bond fur me and my Security to Sign and return I have Sent you the name of the officers of the Company and will now give you a list of names of the whole Company (page 2) John W. Holmes --------------------------------- Hiwassee Feb 9th /61 Dear Sir We have Just held an Election for officers by ballot and according to Law. the day was so disagreeable that there was not half the men out that has enroled there names and all was content with the first Election. I now have on my list over one hundred men. if half the no was to back out I would still have a full company and I am instructed by the Volunteers to Say to you if you Kneed our Service we are Enxious to Reciev orders to march to any point you many require us and I tell you us mountain boyes is the ones if there is any fighting to do will have it to do and we want the best armes that can be had and I hope we will never disgrace them. We want you to have the arms Shiped to Athens as Earley as possible and fowd us a blank bon and we will comply with the law give approved Security for the armes and pay all cost required in getting them here Your obed Servant J. Also a letter from Mr G M Magill to me in regard to armes for my Company. I would like to be cauld into Service if needful as I would like to Serve my Country as a Southern rights man one of the old full blood in 1850 and South Carolinan in principal and if I can not be cauld in to Service with my Company if there is any office vacant that I could fill and you would give me the appointment it would be thankfully received and fild to the best of my ability though I regret to ask for any appointment as I expect there is ten applicants to where there is one Vacancy.
