**WA** UPDATE Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall for people in the Kimberley and North Interior forecast districts Issued at 4:34 am WST on Wednesday 7 January 2015. For people in parts of WA northeast of a line from Bidyadanga to Giles. This includes people in, near or between the following towns: Broome, Derby, Kuri Bay, Kalumburu, Wyndham and Kununurra. Weather Situation A slow moving tropical low lies between Derby and Fitzroy Crossing and is producing showers and thunderstorms over the Kimberley and northeast parts of the North Interior. It will be monitored closely for the potential to move over open water and develop into a tropical cyclone. Whilst there is only a moderate risk of the system developing into a tropical cyclone, it will produce areas of heavy rainfall and gusty thunderstorms until Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms may produce HEAVY RAINFALL that could cause FLASH FLOODING in parts of the warning area, particularly over northern and western parts of the Kimberley and near the tropical low. Flood Advices have also been issued, please refer to bom.gov.au/wa/warnings/ for full details. Gusty thunderstorms may occur over far western parts of the Kimberley, including Broome. Between 9:00 am Tuesday and 5:00 am Wednesday, the following rainfall totals have been recorded: Kalumburu 79.4 millimetres, Curtin RAAF 58.8 millimetres. The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year, but heavy rainfall may occur in some parts of the warning area and cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should: If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams. Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows. Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning. If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. Slow down and turn your headlights on. Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris. If it is raining heavily and you can not see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears. If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
