In one attack, a cat was found decapitated in a resident’s back yard. Autopsy results indicate that the injuries were caused by a human. It is believed that these attacks may have been against pets which had strayed from their yards. Police are advising that pet owners check their yard security to ensure dogs cannot stray and recommend that cats be locked inside, particularly at night. Hendra Police are working in conjunction with RSPCA inspectors and pet owners to identify and prosecute these offenders. Constable Wolstenhulme of Hendra Police said that people need to be aware that a person who intentionally causes pain, unlawfully kills or causes serious injury to an animal is in fact committing a criminal act is a liable for punishment. “Persons found guilty of such acts may be imprisoned for up to seven years.” If you have any information relating to the mistreatment or intentional killing of any pets in the Banyo area, contact police on 131 444, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625).
