***WARNING*** The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning about the recent Green Dot Scam that appears to be the recent trend. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple complaints of people receiving fraudulent calls requesting money. The caller appears to be from a utility company, government agency (Such as the Internal Revenue Service), and a fundraising organization, to include Law Enforcement. The scammer will use scare tactics to try to get you to buy a Green Dot card to pay a bill, make a donation, or “pay a fine” in lieu of an arrest. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: A Green Dot card is a prepaid credit card. Once the numbers are given to the caller, the money can be withdrawn from accounts within seconds from anywhere. HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM: • Always attempt to verify the identity of any individual calling you who claims to represent a business. ***Do not provide money or personal information to an unsolicited caller whose identity you are not able to verify***. • Always take your time making a decision. Legitimate companies won’t pressure you. • If you receive a call along the lines described, do not make a payment by purchasing a Green Dot card or other means. Immediately contact the business / organization to report the call and to verify your account status. • If you received a call along the lines described and you made a payment to the scammer, report that information to a local law enforcement agency. You may also report this information to state or federal agencies such as the Federal Trade Commission.
