¤WE WILL RESIST IHEJIRIKAS TRIAL –Ohaneze youths Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Organisation has said that it would deploy every form of defence at its disposal to resist any attempt to try the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika (retd) at the International Criminal Court (ICC) as demanded by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF). In a strongly worded statement, issued yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Igwe Udenwata, the association condemned the call and warned that the Igbo would resist any attempt at such trial. “We wish to caution and state clearly that those Northern Elders calling for the trial of Lt. General Ihejirika at the International Criminal Court (ICC) are enemies of the Igbo and the Nigerian State at large. “We hereby affirm that we will resist every attempt by some group of individuals, who do not see anything good in the Igbo race, to rubbish the outstanding records of General Ihejirika,” the association warned. Commending the retired General for the excellent discharge of his responsibilities as the Army chief, the youth arm of the Igbo umbrella body said: “We warmly congratulate Gen. Ihejirika on his meritorious service to the fatherland. We welcome the change effected in the military hierarchy but we would have been happier having one of our own among the new Service Chiefs. We appreciate the fact that Gen. Ihejirika would have to retire one day. We thank President Goodluck Jonathan for giving him the opportunity to serve and restore the confidence of the Igbo man in the Nigerian State. “We wish to state categorically that Gen. Ihejirika headed the Nigerian Army with an unblemished professionalism. We thank God for granting him a scandal-free service,” the Igbo youth group stated. SUN
