“WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ENEMY ATTACKS? Ephesians 6 tells us to put on the whole armor of God in order that we may be able to stand against the attacks of the devil. Our battles in this life are not with flesh and blood, but against spiritual wickedness. We have three enemies to battle every day, the world, the flesh, and the demonic. We fight each one in a different way, but we must fight all three with our armor or we will become a casualty. The flesh is the enemy within. We can win these battles by our feet--we run! This is what Joseph did when Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him. “Flee fornication” (1 Co 6:18) is how we win against the flesh. James 4:7 gives us the strategy to defeat the demonic, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” If not surrendered to God, the demonic will establish strongholds in our lives. Our third enemy, the world, will court you, conform you, corrupt you, and then ruin you. Abraham’s nephew Lot is an example of this. We are not told to fight the world nor can we flee from the world. The weapon God gives us to win these battles is given in First John 5:4, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Romans 10:17 tells us, “The just (saved) shall live by faith.” As we learn and obey God’s word, our faith is strengthened to the point we can detect and reject the draw the world has on us. To be victorious in all our battles, we must have on the armor God has provided. Whatever the challenge of the moment, we face the question: will we stand in courage or will we fail because of fear? The courage to do right is not built in the moment of test, but in the days before when we do right and obey God. It is in the moments when our courage is tested that our true character is revealed.
