* WILL THIS BE CHINAS CENTURY? A SKEPTICS VIEW - MEL GURTOV - APRIL 17th 2014 Dear Thirster Colleagues: Will This Be Chinas Century? Mel Gurtov will challenge the widespread view that China will rival or displace the United States as the worlds leading power. In a presentation based on his new book, Gurtov will explore Chinas domestic and international strengths, revealing a country with serious shortcomings as the next global leader. [worldoregon.org/events/programs/headline-and-cultural-forums/will-th is-be-chinas-century-a-skeptic%E2%80%99s-view] Mel will take issue with the widespread view that China is on the way to rivaling or even displacing the United States as the dominant world power. He also will identify serious constraints that will keep that countrys leadership focused for the foreseeable future on challenges at home. Arguing that Chinas economic rise has exacerbated problems of social inequality, environmental degradation, official corruption, and more (and that its military capabilities and ambitions are far more limited than many observers have suggested) he will make a strong case that the most productive US policy will be one of engagement on issues of common concern, rather than confrontation or containment. Mel Gurtov is Professor of Political Science (Emeritus) at Portland State University. He is also Editor-in-Chief of Asian Perspective, an international quarterly. Mel previously served on the staff of the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, Calif. (1966-71), where he was a co-author of the Pentagon Papers, and at the University of California, Riverside (1971-86), where he was professor of political science. He has published over twenty books and numerous articles on East Asian affairs, U.S. foreign policy, and global politics. His most recent books are Will This Be Chinas Century? A Skeptics View; Global Politics in the Human Interest, 5th ed.; Superpower on Crusade: The Bush Doctrine in US Foreign Policy; and Confronting the Bush Doctrine: Critical Perspectives from Asia-Pacific, co-edited with Peter Van Ness. Mel is a frequent visitor to East Asia, where he has been a visiting professor and Senior Fulbright Scholar at Waseda University in Tokyo and Hankuk Foreign Studies Un iversity in Seoul, and has lectured at universities and research institutes in South Korea, Japan, and China. He is fluent in Chinese. He lives in Deadwood, OR where he is trying to be a farmer. Please come to Thirsters on Thursday, April 17th to hear Mel Gurtov talk about Chinas future. Roz Roseman has arranged for Mel to speak and will introduce him to Thirsters. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm (presentation starts at 8:00) at MCMENAMINS BROADWAY PUB, 1504 NE BROADWAY (AT NE 15th AVE), PORTLAND 97232. John Dougherty Co-Coordinator Semper Sitiens
