.@WRAL is doing important work publicizing some hidden damaging provisions in the budget. Here are a couple of examples: 1. The budget gives a school bus driver and a school custodian a $500 raise but a driver and custodian for a state agency $1000 and 5 bonus vacation days. There is no policy reason to justify this unequal treatment. 2. The budget removes the SBI from the Department of Justice, which is independent of the Governor, and puts it in the very administration it is frequently called upon to investigate. The SBI is currently investigating the Governors Corrections Division, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and former employer. It makes no sense to move the SBI under the Governors control. The SBI has been independent since its inception 75 years ago. Both the Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs Associations, in addition to many DAs, opposed the transfer. This is more bad policy.
