“We went into action with sixty rounds of ammunition to the man, - TopicsExpress

“We went into action with sixty rounds of ammunition to the man, forty in the cartridge boxes and twenty in the pockets, and even by the slow process of loading at the muzzle it did not take us very long to exhaust the supply. We then used the cartridges of the dead and wounded, but finally made a detail of two men from each company to bring ammunition from the wagons containing the reserve, and several of the detail were killed or wounded either going or coming. In his official report of the battle our division commander mentions the 2nd Ohio as one of the regiments ‘That after exhausting its ammunition and that taken from the dead and wounded, still held its position.’” -- Major Anson McCook, 2nd Ohio
