~ When I came to UCF, one of the most surprising aspects of Florida was the lack of collaboration between the universities. In fact, it was downright competitive. On one of my early grants, we were trying to create a collaborative center across UCF, UF, and FSU. Although the faculty were in to it, the leaderships behavior at places like UF and FSU was downright condescending. This was in stark contrast to what we had in Pittsburgh with the collaboration between CMU and Pitt. This article does a nice job explaining how collaboration among universities can drive the economy. Although were not in as close proximity as Pitt and CMU, its too bad we cant see more of that in Florida. the tech sector relies most heavily on two dominant powerhouse institutions: the University of Pittsburgh—the sixth largest recipient of federally sponsored research funding among U.S. universities in 2013, known best for its programs in biological and health sciences, engineering and nanoscience, and philosophy—and Carnegie Mellon University, known best for its program in robotics and its number-one-ranked School of Computer Science.
