“ Who is my Neighbor?” As I was driving today, the song, “Until the Whole World Hears” came on the radio by #Castingcrowns. The first verse goes (picture me singing) “ Lord, I want to fill your heart and see the world through your eyes, I want to be your hands and feet, I want to live a life that leads” I started thinking about the Lawyer in the Parable of the Good Samaritan that asked Jesus,“ Who is my neighbor?” Jesus begins telling a story of the man who was in the wrong part of town; he was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. The first person that saw this man was a Priest who crossed the road so he didn’t have to be inconvenienced. This injured man is not part of my congregation…thought the Priest. What would the other denominations think? The second guy that past by was a Levite, more than likely a very religious man, and could probably quote more scripture than the Priest that walked by. The Levite was probably on his motorized bike on his IPhone listening to his music, checking his Facebook status, and crossed the street and pretended he never saw him. Then came the Samaritan, who when he saw him had compassion. The Samaritan cleaned his wounds placed him in his car (animal) and carried him to the Marriott (Inn). He took care of him. When he departed he told the Marriott (Inn) clerk to take care of him, to feed him, dress his wounds, and when I return I will pay you for all your trouble. I shutter to think how many times I passed by someone in need because I didn’t have time or wanted to be bothered. I can still see people’s faces (you know the ones) God told me specifically to speak into, help, feed them or give them a drink of water. I have found myself crossing the same street as the Priest and the Levite more than I ever like to admit. I have to pray everyday for God to help me have compassion on people and not judge them as I stand on the outside looking in. One thing I have learned over the last few years is people just want you to listen and genuinely care about what is going on in their life. It has become a passion for Karen and I to be the hands and feet of Jesus wherever we are. That doesn’t make us special. It’s just Biblical. Sometimes all it takes is a warm smile, going the extra mile to make someone, who is having a bad day, feel better about life in general. Life is a gift! Go make it count!!!!
