:::::::::Why Minister brought Librarian from Guwahati?::::: DISTRICT LIBRARY AT SILCHAR IN SHAMBLES, STATE GOVT INDIFFERENT Assam government continues with its deprivation of Barak Valley in terms of basic infrastructure. Cultural activists of Cachar expressed concern at the pathetic condition of Silchar district library, which is in sorry state and lacks basic minimum facilities. The condition of the green rooms of the auditorium is in a deplorable condition with its broken windows and electrical fittings missing. The attached toilets stinks due to lack of water. The most surprising fact is that the authority of the library charges Rs 400 per day from organizations for cleanliness and the money is being taken without providing any proper receipt or cash memo. The stage curtain was purchased 20 years back and is still in use. The library was recently renovated only on paper. Cultural activists, expressing their resentment at the condition of the district library said that it is high time to raise “our voice against the indifferent attitude of the authorities”. Multiple authorities are entrusted with the responsibility to take care of the hall. “The stage is being taken care of by the PWD (civil), while the PWD (electrical) is entrusted to look after the electricity section of the auditorium. But, both the departments do not have any co–ordination, each blaming the other and deriving fun. It is high time the political organizations, educational institutes and literary associations, who use the auditorium, must come forward to pitch for the overall improvement of the district library auditorium. Employees of the library said that the post of the assistant librarian has been vacant for the last three months and the librarian hardly comes here as he has to look after the Hailakandi district library too. Presently, no one is given the charge of the Silchar district library in the absence of librarian and assistant librarian, they claimed. They said that MLA and Minister Gautam Roy brought with him one Assamese-speaking Librarian from Guwahati who refused to join, as he was reluctant to work in a Bengali culture. The employees, mostly ladies, said that they also did not feel safe in the library as there are not many male employees. Moreover, a security person is also not there. They also revealed the fact that “the library lacks water facilities”. “Most of the time, we bring drinking water from our homes.” Repeated representations to the Director about the problems evoked no result. Former Deputy Commissioner of Cachar H K Dev Mahanta had a negligent attitude towards the library and staffs. This news-story is brought to you by Barak Gana Parishad.
