*** Winter Weather Still Expected Friday into the Weekend...but Uncertainties Remain *** A complex weather system is expected to move toward our region Friday into the weekend. Low pressure...developing across the Southern Plains...will move east today toward the southeast states...then turn and move northeast Saturday. A major coastal low pressure area will then develop off the North Carolina coast line Friday afternoon...moving northeast toward New England Saturday. While the track and timing of this system have become more consistent among the models, there unfortunately remain questions regarding the depth of the cold air that will be in place as precipitation spreads across the region from the southwest Friday morning. Computer models have trended warmer...leading to less snow and more potential for sleet and even freezing rain than was earlier thought. One thing we are fairly certain about is that areas east of the Blue Ridge...principally the Piedmont will see mainly a rain event. The graphics below give our current estimate of what is expected. Please note, changes to this forecast are likely with the afternoon forecast package. Winter weather watches, warnings, and advisories will all be possible as we move closer to this winter weather event. If you are planning to travel anywhere throughout the region Friday into the weekend...especially across the mountains and areas north of I-64...please remain abreast of the latest forecasts. Winter weather conditions are expected. Another system will bring more winter weather to the region and colder temperatures early next week.
