*** Winter weather concerns increasing for Friday into Saturday *** *** More snow possible early next week *** We will notice a cooling trend today and Thursday as a weather disturbance skirts by to our north helping to pull colder Canadian air into the region. But, the real focus is on a developing storm system now in the Southern Plains. This system is expected to move east into the Southeast U.S. by late Thursday...then turn and move northeast Thursday night and Friday. A significant coastal low pressure area is expected to develop off the South Carolina/North Carolina coast late Friday...moving to off the Mid-Atlantic coast by late Saturday. It appears that enough cold air will be available for accumulating snow west of the Blue Ridge and a rain/snow mix to the east with little or no snow accumulation east of the Blue Ridge. Although precipitation with this system is an almost absolute certainty...the amount of snowfall is not because of lingering questions as to the depth of cold air that will be in place as this system moves through. Behind the main part of this system early Saturday...what is known as a deformation zone could bring more accumulating snow to areas west of the Blue Ridge. If you have plans to travel anywhere throughout the Mid-Atlantic region Friday into the weekend...you will definitely want to remain abreast of later forecasts. Winter weather headlines appear likely with this event if it continues to unfold as currently indicated. For early next week...we will see a return to below normal temperatures. Not by any means as cold as earlier this month...but below normal nonetheless. In addition...a strong upper-level disturbance could bring more accumulating snow to the region Sunday into Monday...especially the mountains. Please stay tuned!
