(Wise and Strong) The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said: “He who is wise and strong keeps his inordinate (excessive) appetites (desires) under control and strives for the life which comes after death; but he who is foolish and weak, subordinates (underlings) himself to sensual pleasures and yet hopes for the best from his Lord.” [Ibn Majah] If you sit all day at your desk and don’t even attempt to accomplish any of the tasks you’ve been assigned, should you expect a promotion? If you don’t put any of the ingredients together should you expect them to come together themselves and present themselves before you as a gourmet (pleasure loving) feast(meal)? When we want things in life we put some effort towards achieving them. Should we not then do the same for the things of the Hereafter? If a person refuses to work yet hopes for fantastic outcomes, he is considered foolish. Shouldn’t he also be considered foolish who refuses to do anything for the Hereafter but expects miraculous bounties? Keep your desires under control and do those deeds which Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) has explicitly told us will bring us the reward of the Hereafter, then you can live as you please in Paradise.
