“Won Yard Contest” – Barber County Index, Oct. 7, 1926, pg. 1 The Better Yards Contest sponsored by the Lions Club and cooperated in by the Monday Afternoon Club and the Community Club, closed October 1st, and the committee, Mrs. W.E. Stout, Mrs. G.E. Alexander and L.W. Fullerton, have found that the yard of Mrs. John Luallen has won the coveted silver cup for the year of 1926. The contest was based on a score card which took into consideration everything about the yard: grass, trees, shrubbery, plants, arrangement, condition of the house and the premises, and the improvements made during the season. After carefully scoring every contestant’s yard they found that the yard of Mrs. Luallen ranked far above any of the others. The silver cup has been on display in the window of the Overstreet jewelry store for some time, and now will be presented to Mrs. Luallen at the Lions Club this Thursday evening.
