“Words are but the vague shadows of the volumes we mean. Little audible links, they are, chaining together great inaudible feelings and purposes.” ~Theodore Dreiser August 27 is the birthday of American novelist and journalist Theodore Albert Dreiser. Dreiser was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1871. Dreiser attended Indiana University in the years 1889-1890 before dropping out to become a journalist for the Chicago Globe newspaper. In April of 1912, fate stepped in for Dreiser, as he was going to return from his first European holiday in the Titanic but was talked out of going by an English publisher who recommended he board a cheaper boat (sometimes it pays to be frugal!). Dreiser is best known for his novels AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY, and SISTER CARRIE, which feature a theme of the main characters succeeding in spite of their lack of moral convictions. Dreiser himself had moral convictions and was involved in several campaigns against social injustice. Theodore Dreiser died in 1945.
