• Yemen is also seeing an increase in attacks against government buildings and the military from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), following a recent broadcast from AQAP, accusing the Yemeni government of passing on too much information about the group to the US, saying that it appears as if the US Ambassador is leading the country. They have condemned the on-going drone attacks carried out by the US and have warned of increased attacks on military and government personnel and westerners in general. This runs alongside increased tensions in the north of Yemen, between the Houthi rebels and the conservative Salafis and jihadists in the city of Damaj, in Saada province. These groups have seen bloody scenes over the last two weeks and restraint has been called for by the government. This fighting, however, has amplified the sectarian dimension of the conflict in remote northern Saada province, which has long been virtually inaccessible to reporters. In other southern areas of Yemen, AQAP have targeted military forces and continue to get the protection of the local tribes. Security has also been stepped up in the capital Sanaa, as more attacks on military and government buildings are expected. • On Wednesday 6th November, the Netherlands has asked a court in Hamburg, responsible for the ‘law enforcement activities in regard to the exercise of sovereign rights,’ to release the 28 activists and two journalists being detained by Russia, following a protest against Artic oil drilling. However, Russia has failed to send its own delegation to the UN tribunal, saying that it does not recognise its judgement. • On Friday, 8th November, the Philippines has been hit by one of the strongest storms ever recorded, Typhoon Haiyan. Schools and offices are closed and all flights to the country are cancelled. Life has come to a standstill. Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes and seek shelter where they can. The full forces of the storm is not known yet, but the storm will move over the weekend towards Vietnam, where it may increase in force. Huge amounts of destruction are expected and poor quality housing in rural areas have been wiped out. 12 million people could be affected by this Super Typhoon.
