"Yes, I am running for State Assembly in California. I cringe writing those words. But the way this campaign unfolds will be quite a bit different from what you would expect from a traditional campaign. Although I will be filing the paperwork and my name will be appearing on the ballot, the statements you will see through text and video will largely be made by other members of the Socialist Party USA, other socialists, and members of the working class. If it was possible to completely remove my identity from the election, I would have done so. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Zapatista movement, particularly their management of identity, and would love to replicate some of their strategies throughout this campaign. My Local in Los Angeles has decided to wage a campaign that focuses on outreach, on increasing the public’s awareness about socialism, and to give the public a real opportunity to hear directly from socialists. What leads someone to socialism? Who are socialists so passionate about the movement? The goals may be somewhat different from a traditional campaign as the focus is on creating a true people’s campaign.
