“Yesterday, Gov. Fallin signed HB 3399 to repeal the Common Core standards and revert back to the 2010 Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) standards until new Oklahoma standards can be developed. As always, OEA will work to support educators across the state to help make this transition as smooth and successful as possible. Oklahoma’s education professionals are all too familiar with our lawmakers passing sweeping changes requiring massive transitions in our education system. Fortunately, they are resilient. They will meet this new challenge, determined to continue providing the quality education Oklahoma’s students deserve. Our organization hopes that as we move forward developing our own state standards, educators will be included as an integral part of that process. There were valid criticisms of Common Core. We should learn from those to ensure our new standards will be developmentally appropriate, accompanied by fair and rational assessments, and our education professionals should receive sufficient professional development to ensure successful implementation in every district in the state. Obviously, such needs must be accompanied by the necessary funding if we intend for this new era of Oklahoma standards to be a success.” Linda Hampton, OEA President.
