#YoungHeroAward Alum of the Week: Talia Santiago ; #YHA 2014 Talia was nominated as a #YoungHero when she was in 10th grade at Kensington Culinary Arts High School. As a 10th grader, Talia is known to consistently show leadership and civic engagement, especially through her position as Program Director of the Youth Court Program. The Youth Court Program is a peer-run judicial system that provides alternative consequences for first-time offenders. These offenders might otherwise be tried in Truancy Court or given out-of-school suspensions, both of which options give little opportunity for learning and growth. Talia has also been an advocate for youth court programs as an alternative to zero tolerance policies within the School District of Philadelphia. Through her internship at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, she has written letters of support for grant applications, met with potential funders, and testified before the Philadelphia City Council as a proponent of youth court programs. She is a role model for her fellow students on how to establish school partnerships with local justice agencies and community organizations, and how to advocate for change.
