#Zamboanga Update The standoff between the MNLF and Philippine troops has gotten worse on its eighth day, with the military firing airstrikes to suppress the movement of the rebels. “There is still exchange of fire between the military and the MNLF,” says a Christian worker from Zamboanga. “MNLF are now scattered in different areas in the city proper.” “There was an airstrike yesterday in the city proper and snipers from the military and MNLF are still everywhere.” “Except for the military aircraft that is taking those who will attend the hajj in Mecca to Cebu, all flights are still cancelled,” she continues. “Transportation via sea is still cancelled. Classes and work are still suspended until Friday.” According to local media, 62 have already been killed and 112 wounded in the conflict. About a hundred rebels have also been killed or captured. Seven hostages have been released. Fourteen have escaped, and nine have been rescued. As of posting, officials say 70,000 refugees have been recorded. "Please continue to pray, the number of evacuees have reached more or less 65,000 scattered in 28 evacuation centers,” says the worker. “Evacuees staying with relatives and friends are perhaps not included here. The biggest evacuation center, Grandstand, is becoming very congested. More evacuees are coming in since their communities were set on fire.” "So far, the evacuees within our responsibility are okay,” she continues. “Yesterday, one of our lay leaders, together with her children, was rescued in the Boulevard. There were nine of them. They’ve been in the sea for several days since they evacuated from Rio Hondo.” “Thanks for continuously praying for us,” she says. “Your prayers sustain us in this time of crisis.”
