#cbcmar An Alberta Clipper (fast moving low pressure system that begins in Alberta and moves very quickly west to east across the country) continues to track north of the Maritimes this hour. The system will bring in relatively light flurries and showers to the Maritimes, but a dramatic fall in temperatures tonight. Temperatures will plummet as winds turn first west then northwest behind the cold front the Clipper is bringing in. The leading edge of the cold will reach Edmundston and the northwest of NB near 3 pm, Fredericton near 5 pm, Moncton and Charlottetown near 7 pm, Halifax near 9 pm, and Sydney by midnight. To give you an idea of what kind of a drop were expecting, heres a breakdown province-by-province: This afternoons temperatures: -8 to 0. Low temperatures tonight: -28 to -20. Additionally blustery northwest winds (northwest 20-30 km/h gusts to 50 km/h) will produce a wind chill, making it feel -30 to -40 for most Saturday morning. The wind chill will increase the risk of hypothermia and frost bite to exposed skin. An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the northwestern corner of New Brunswick by Environment Canada. This afternoons temperatures: -2 to 1. Low temperatures tonight: -20 to -17. While not as cold as New Brunswick the winds will be gustier on PEI Saturday morning (northwest 40 gusting to 60 km/h). The province should expect a wind chill making it feel -30 to -34 Saturday morning. Additionally with a few spots in PEI getting above 0 this afternoon expect any slush or standing water to freeze solid overnight. This afternoons temperatures: -2 to 5. Low temperatures tonight: -20 to -12. As we move late into this evening and overnight, temperatures will begin to fall as quickly as 2-3 degrees an hour. With most temperatures above freezing this afternoon there is quite a bit of standing water and slush. That will, of course, be freezing solid in the return of the very cold air tonight. Additionally Nova Scotia will be experiencing a wicked wind chill Saturday morning. Winds will be northwest 30-40 with gusts of 50-60 km/h. The resulting wind chill will make it feel in the range of -22 to -32 for much of Saturday. Tips for this blast of cold: 1) Clear your driveway/walking paths as best you can of any slush 2) Watch for ice patches on the roads overnight and Saturday 3) Be prepared to dress warm and in layers to combat the wind chill on Saturday This latest blast of cold is short lived. Temperatures will rise through Sunday and into Monday. Monday though will see rain and high winds for Nova Scotia and PEI, while New Brunswick will see snow in the north becoming rain for central and southern areas of the province. I will have a post on the Monday system up this evening. I had some maps for Monday ready, but I didnt like them so Im going to re-work them to give everyone a more comprehensive outlook. (Images attached to this post show the temperature trend as it relates to the wind direction for the rest of today and the start of Saturday for each of the provincial capitals)
