#cbcmar Good afternoon, some sun but with a bite in the air today in the Maritimes and that cold air is going to be sticking around for the week impacting both the New Years Eve forecast and the potential for some late weekend stormy weather. Lets start with New Years and breakdown what you can expect province-by-province. New Brunswick Mostly clear skies are expected on New Years Eve with a light wind blowing out of the west at near 10 km/h. By midnight temperatures are expected to be in the range of -18 to -10 with the coldest temperatures in the north of New Brunswick. You will want to dress warm if youre going to be spending any period of time outside as the wind chill will make it feel -25 to -15 through much of the evening and near midnight. Prince Edward Island A scattering of clouds is expected to linger through much of Wednesday evening with a few isolated flurries around the province. For any given community on PEI Id say you have about a 40% chance of seeing a flurry on New Years Eve. Temperatures will be cold, in the range of -12 to -10 by midnight. Winds will be a bit breezy being sustained near 20 km/h out of the west. When you factor in those winds PEI will see a wind chill making it feel -20 to -18 near midnight. Nova Scotia Some broken cloud cover will be over the province on Wednesday evening. There will also be a chance of seeing a few flurries with the best chance for those flurries in the southwest of the mainland and in Cape Breton. Much like New Brunswick and PEI the biggest weather related factor to New Years Eve plans will be the cold temperatures. By midnight in Nova Scotia temperatures will range from -12 to -6 with a light wind out of the northwest making it feel -20 to -12 when you factor in the wind chill. New Years Day will see increased cloudiness across the Maritimes and a scattered light snowfall. Snow accumulations are unlikely to be more than 2 to 5 cm on Thursday. After that we have to look forward to the potential for some stormy weather to arrive on the weekend. Weekend Storm Potential The day to watch on the weekend for us in the Maritimes is Sunday. The approaching weather system actually has some similarities to the one that produced heavy rain, high winds, and warm temperatures on Christmas Day. There are also some significant differences though. On Saturday a low off the Gulf of Mexico will meet up with a second low pressure system moving through the mid-western US. Unlike the Christmas Day storm which stayed well west of us, the centre of this storm looks to track more directly towards the Maritimes on Sunday. With the cold air already in place much of the region will likely see snow to start with a turn through freezing rain and then to rain. That transition from snow to freezing rain to rain looks most likely for Nova Scotia, PEI, and along the Bay of Fundy coastline in New Brunswick. Central and northern New Brunswick could see an extended period of snow mixed with freezing rain. There remains enough uncertainty with this system in the long range forecast that it would be premature to start trying to give details of expected snowfall amounts or duration of the freezing rain at this time. Bottom lining it, right now I would say to expect some winter weather conditions on the roads in the Maritimes on Sunday as well as some high wind gusts. Lots of time to watch this one develop, some long range forecast models are even bringing it in as a less intense system. More updates from both myself and Peter Coade to come on this one.
