#cbcmar With no major weather systems on the way in tonight the biggest impact to New Years plans will be the cold. Ive updated my forecast for near midnight for each Maritime province and you can find those attached as images to this post. I should point out that tonight, last night, and the previous is the coldest stretch of weather weve been in since March. I crunched the numbers for a few stations across the region and here is what I found. Edmundston: Low this morning -30.8, coldest since March 24th when it was -32.9 Fredericton: Low this morning -19.7, coldest since March 25th when it was -21.6 Charlottetown: Low this morning -16.5, coldest since March 5th when it was -17.8 Halifax Intl: Low this morning -16.2, coldest since March 6th when it was -18.2 Sydney: Low this morning -11.5, coldest since December 9th when it was -12.2 The absolute coldest spots in the Maritimes this morning ended up being: Red Pines NB at -37.7; Harrington PEI at -17.0; and Debert NS at -18.8. Despite the deep freeze most stations in the Maritimes have seen colder temperatures reported for a December 31st in years past. Temperatures will be similar (if not quite as cold) tonight so if your plans involve being outside for any period of time dress warmly and in layers. New Years Day will see a slight warm up (highs remain below 0) and with some light, scattered snow falling across the Maritimes that could accumulate to 2 to 5 cm. Now onto the update for the stormy weather brewing for Sunday. A powerful centre of low pressure will move up through southern Ontario and track almost directly over the St. Lawrence River Valley on Sunday. The track places the Maritimes on the warm side of the storm where southerly winds will advect in warm, moist air. Initially we will have some very cold air in place. This means that the storm will likely start as snow for the Maritimes early on Sunday before the warm air takes over and the snow mixes through ice pellets and freezing rain to rain for most late into Sunday (see attached image illustrating this transition). Confidence is high that this nasty weather will move through on Sunday though timing could change by 6 to 8 hours. Its much more difficult to start talking about exact amounts of snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets at this time. That will have to wait until the system begins to mature near the end of the this week. Some long range guidance is still giving the potential for some significant accumulations of snow and ice pellets before the rain takes over. By significant I mean 10 cm or more for most of the Maritimes with more than 20 cm possible in northern New Brunswick. New Brunswick will also be at risk of seeing a prolonged period of freezing rain. Road conditions will be poor during the storm and if travel plans can be altered to Saturday or Monday that would be best. Meteorologist Peter Coade will have updates on the storm on Friday on a regional TV evening news program (Im off until next Monday). A little strange to end with this after the storm talk, but a happy New Year to everyone and all the best for 2015!
