# courtesyGreater kashmir Screening Test or Qualifying Test? Some candidates are questioning the selection process of recently held SSB exam The recently held Jammu and Kashmir Service Selection Board (JKSSB) exam has come under a cloud of suspicion with candidates questioning the entire selection process and alleging favoritism. According to the students, the written exam held on September 17, in which the minimum eligibility criteria was 10+ 2 , was supposed to be a mere screening test, which if qualified would make them eligible for the interview and that the points obtained in the test would have no significance in the final selection. But just a day after the exam was held, candidates were shocked when it became public that the written test was not a screening test but a qualifying exam. Candidates allege that they came to know about the weightage of the qualifying test to be 65 points only after the exam when it was uploaded on the official website of SSB on September 18. They feel they were deliberately kept in the dark so that the suitable and deserving candidates among them could be sidelined to favor certain “blue-eyed candidates” who were already aware of this “fraud”. The reduction in the marks allotted for Masters, B.ed, M.ed and PhD degrees from 10, 15, 10 and 5 marks to just 2, 3, 3, 2 marks respectively has also aroused suspicion and a feeling of injustice among the candidates. Candidates with higher qualification complain that this system puts those having lower qualifications at par with them. They also feel that attaching no importance to B.Ed and M.Ed degrees for the selection of teachers is an injustice with them. Further, there has been no reduction in the points allotted to the interview, which many believe is only meant to help the blue-eyed candidates and keep the doors of corruption open. While many students said that they were not informed about the significance of the test in the final selection, some candidates, however, said that a notice had appeared in the newspaper informing them about the weightage given to the written test, higher qualification and interview for the final selection. “My friends and I were well aware that the screening test carried 65 points and that separate points would be awarded for our degrees and the subsequent interview. We had read the notice which appeared in a newspaper,” said a candidate who appeared in the SSB exam and spoke on condition of anonymity. But candidates who feel that fraudulent means have been used in the exam are now requesting the concerned authorities to change the members of the interview board, particularly the convener, to ensure justice and fair play. They also want the points for higher qualification, particularly for professional degrees, to be increased on pro-rata basis and the points for interview to be reduced from 20 to 5. The points thus saved should be allotted to professional qualifications. They believe this will reduce chances of corruption and nepotism................
