*******demonic magic************** The runes Shadowhunters use are created by the angels, right? But in the books there have been mentions of demonic runes. I don’t know if this has been mentioned in the books and I missed it but who created demonic runes? Is it the Greater Demons? If so, warlocks have been mentioned using runes and are the children of demons so why don’t they put the runes on themselves a la Shadowhunters? No one knows who created demonic runes any more than anyone knows who created demons or, for that matter, who created English. (In fact, we know there are multiple demonic languages, each presumably with its own runes.) Demonic magic is a chaotic, varied, complicated thing that doesn’t make a lot of sense to humans; what partial knowledge warlocks have managed to figure out about it and how to use it is, exactly, what the Spiral Labyrinth and things like the Book of the White contain. - Runes are not “things you draw on yourself that give you power.” Runes are letters, or ideograms, or anyway part of a larger language system. We don’t know or understand the angelic language that the Gray Book runes are in, because we are incapable of doing so as humans. (It’s implied that Clary’s rune-making power may come from having some unconscious intuitive grasp for the angelic language of the Gray Book runes.) We in fact only know they ARE runes and not just squiggles because Raziel said they were runes. There probably ARE demonic runes that you put on yourself, but there are also demonic runes that you write in the air or that form themselves out of the blood of an injured demon or that are formed by the arrangement of stars on a particular day or whatever. Demonic magic: it’s all over the damn place. Also, demonic magic is scary and dangerous, even if you are a warlock who wields it. I think most warlocks would balk at putting a demonic rune on themselves because who knows what creepy demon stuff might occur? That’s what there are protective circles and whatnot. Drawing magic stuff right on your own body is some high-risk stuff when you are dealing with magic that is by definition pure evil. ~Mrs Carstairs
