{events of my time} ATTACK ON BUHARI: AN ESCAPE FROM CIVIL WAR - TopicsExpress

{events of my time} ATTACK ON BUHARI: AN ESCAPE FROM CIVIL WAR Last week SUICIDE-BOMB-ATTACK on General Muhammadu Buhari was no doubt a very narrow escape from another civil War in this Country. We have had it so bad in the past from 1966-1970 when some disgruntled young elements in the Nigerian Army took the sanctity of our hard-earned Sovereignty for granted by staging the first Bloody Military Coup in Nigeria where foremost Nationalists like the then Prime Minister, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Chief Ladoke Akintola who actively participated in the patriotic struggle for Nigeria’s Independence lost their precious lives. The resultant effect of that senseless Military Coup which was full of sentiment (in my own perception) cost Nigeria and her citizens across board, more than three solid years of Civil War that has invariably led to our inability to produce a credible, reliable and sustainable Administrative Leadership at all levels of Government in the country till date. I did not witness that very unfortunate and highly regrettable Civil War but I have read much about it via different sources that did not only witness it but also participated fully in the entire war. The late Nkemba of Nnewi; Dim Ckukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu narrated a lot about the shameful War in his book: ‘Because I am Involved.’ Chief Segun Ogunsanwo also revealed much of the sad story of the Civil War in his favourite book: ‘Awo – Unfinished Greatness.’ While in the recent time before his demise, our renown and one of the greatest Nigerian Professors, the literary Icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe seems to have crowned up the sad story of Nigeria-Biafra War when he launched his very last piece of writings, his personal history of Biafra titled (in a most regrettable manner); “THERE WAS A COUNTRY.” Whoever has read or is opportune to read those aforementioned books or more will certainly bear me witness that Nigeria is back on track moving towards a similar Civil War but this time around it may be more devastatingly unimaginable as GEJ is still desperate in pursuance of his self-centred goal of becoming the next President at all cost whether Nigerians want him or not. Judging from that last week GMB’s terrible episode in Kaduna State; the Government of day has created more suspicion in the minds of average Nigerians on where, when, who and how to sincerely tackle TERRORISM than the negative pictures they are busy painting all around. What baffles me most on that well-planned Assassination Attempt on General Buhari’s life was simply the aftermath of that dastardly act of evil. Immediately the sad incidence which involved General Buhari and the foremost Islamic Scholar-Shiekh Dahiru Bauchi ocurred, an unbelievable crowd of Soldiers were massively deployed to the metropolis and its environs perhaps by the usual order from the above alongside 24hrs COFEW imposed by the Kaduna State Government, all in the name of fore-stalling any breakdown of Law and Order. What a very funny and laughable Government that is always comfortable with the provision of medicine after death. Many Nigerians might have seen that heinous assassination attempt as a narrow escape for General Buhari who was suspected to be the main target but I vehemently differ from that wrong impression. To my own ‘belief’ not impression, it was a very narrow escape for Nigeria from unavoidable Civil War! In the past the Ruling Party through the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua clamped down on some suspected Religious Extremists by way of exercising Presidential Extreme or Veto Powers and today we are facing irresolvable Security Challenges courtesy of a politically-coined Insurgency ‘Boko Haram. Now the same Ruling Party through the present Govt. of GEJ with the support of some Political Hypocrites is desperately clamping down on the Opposition Party and many of us are busy pretending as if nothing is happening or Jonathan is not the first to be so brutal. Honestly speaking, if the Government of the day continues the way it’s going; displaying fragrant impunity and dictatorship, creating more anxiety than hope, oppressing and openly wagging meaningless War against the opposition-particularly the popular and outspoken members of the opposition, exercising maximum powers which is fast becoming what I will like to describe as ‘Presidential Extremism’ (or Terrorism, if you like) without recourse to its possible consequences, and many other attitudinal impediments that are not different from the ones mentioned in Chief Obasanjo’s famous Letter to Mr. President and Former Governor Nyako’s popular Memo to the Northern Governors’ Forum, I am sorry Nigeria may soon experience the Sudanese Political Imbroglios. Whether we like or not only the TRUTH and nothing but the TRUTH will set us free. THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
