*gah* What is with all these local bands getting small-local - TopicsExpress

*gah* What is with all these local bands getting small-local managers lately. Ive never heard of a band having a positive experience with a small-manager. Generally, they do more damage than good to the band (the only thing worse is if theyre a parent or partner to somebody in the band). As a promoter, I hate dealing with them as they grind the whole booking process down to almost a halt, try ridiculous negotiation tactics (which 99% of the time end with the band losing a booking) and very often dont have the vaguest clue about what theyre doing. Heres one example, a small band hit me up about playing their 3rd ever show at one of my events, I said yeah Im keen, you guys sound awesome. Their response is cool well get you in touch with our manager and well get that date done. I roll my eyes (as I usually do when a local manager is mentioned) but say sweet, no problems. 2 weeks later their manager contacts me saying they wont play for less than $300. At which point I laugh and hang-up the phone. Dude didnt even deserve a response. 3rd show ever... for an original band.... and their manager is forcing them out of events by demanding $300 per show. L.O.L. Btw - I know some of my mates bands have recently got small-time managers, dont take this message as being about you. Ill tell you guys directly what I think next time I see you in person. :D
