#gender #roles #teaching #parenting Yesterday my daughter and I went to Boston Pizza for dinner and she saw a poster of a man ballroom dancing with a woman and it appeared he had makeup on. My daughter said Boys dont wear makeup and I said some do and she said My daddy doesnt and I said Thats okay. Some boys do. Everyone is allowed to do whatever they want to make themselves feel pretty or handsome and she said thats silly. .boys dont wear makeup or nail polish I do my best to teach my daughter that there are no rules when it comes to gender roles... there are certain things you have to be responsible for.. but its up to the person to figure out what that is. There is no right or wrong. I dont want her to fall into the idea that when you are different, thats silly. Or out of this world. I know she learns a lot of this from daycare.. and I dont want her to become a part of the social norm.. that believes its okay to condemn or judge or make fun of others who are different... I had such a hard time sending my daughter to daycare because I know those are things that children can pick up. So I do my best to enforce a world of non-judgement and acceptance and compassion for her... I have a big problem with gender roles.. I teach her to say I am happy and strong .. when she starts whining or pouting... I say.. Would you rather be pouty over this because you didnt get your way.. or would you be happy and strong? and she pulls her shoulders back and lifts her chin and says HAPPY AND STRONG.. and when someone tries to intimidate her.. I teach her to say JUST BRING IT lol I know that we live on the reserve and shes gotta be tough.. people might say Oh thats everywhere but I know from experience.. there is more fighting and bullying on reserve.. I want my children to be confident enough to stick up for themselves.. but I want their first instinct to be love. On another note: I think food is good
