In my still somewhat secret, very low profile and outstandingly speculative interpretation of quantum theory, where quantum particles are conceptual entities mediating between pieces of matter (arxiv.org/abs/1004.2530 ), the higgs field (rightly so Sean Carroll point to the fact that it is mainly a field, and not very much a particle, although -- my view -- not really a field in space, but thats another matter) is the equivalent for the physical material entities what the cultural field is for humans. Its indeed everywhere were humans live, and its never zero, and it behaves like an interacting particle when humans interact with it. Its what gives mass to human concepts in their way of communicating with other humans, indeed, the cultural field is what carries all the human concepts in communication, but also slows them down or speeds them up according to its density.
