...hubby and I took the Empire Builder to and from Seattle in May/June for a family wedding...a few weeks before, I received a call from Amtrak saying that they would not guarantee the connection in Chicago on the Michigan Wolverine. They gave me two choices: we could stay on rails, taking extra time to pass through California and get into Chicago in time to take the Wolverine the next morning...or...we could get a room in Chicago for the night, at our expense, and come back to the station to take the Wolverine. We talked about it and decided if we did miss the 6pm north, we would be ok staying in the Metropolitan Lounge overnight, as its quite comfy. We called her back to tell her we did not want the extended trip. Not once did she mention that the station closes down and puts everyone out...Had we not gotten to the station just in time to catch the 6pm Wolverine, we would have been put out in the rain with no place to go...is this a common thing to happen?
