(...on this day, I arrived early for church; the large Easter crowd, however, left me no choice but to find seating in the balcony pews. In doing so, I secured for myself an aisle seat, as is my habit, and thus ensconced, took survey of the surroundings. The air was cold, the girls in their dresses were pretty, and I spotted not a few men who evidently needed my help in tying a proper knot in their neckties. Funny, too, were the girls who, unaccustomed to the tall shoes they chose for this day, gingerly took wobbly steps down the sloping aisle to their pews. At length, a very pretty young woman, dark and demure, sat down directly in front of me, the man and his wife in that pew moving slightly to allow her room. I watched with fascination as the mans wife unabashedly examined the young woman, her hair, then her attire, and finally her shoes, in a ritual I had seen a thousand times, in a thousand places. I began to reflect on the odd ways of humanity when, at a word, the priest began the service...)
