“one of the problems faced by our students is usually they are not free to choose a field of their own choice. Parents normally impose upon them a field of study, which may not be suitable for the child. The service is available in some private-owned education institutions of Pakistan, but in state-run educational institutions there is no such concept. I was also enrolled in a school, which did not offer such service. Career counseling is a growing need among school students to help them choose a career of their interest and find the best one suited to their aspirations and competencies”, these words were uttered by Karishma Sairaj, a student from district Charsadda, who stood 1st in annual Inter Examinations from Charsadda For more information, Please listen the audio and translation of the program. Asma Ali: Khan Baba, our guests look weak, what is the reason? Khan Baba: This is because they worked hard for annual examinations and studied all the time. They got top positions in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations 2012-13, because they worked extra hard. Position holder student: Special thanks to CRSS management for inviting us as despite making a distinction, none of the TV channel or radio or concerned authority invited us to honor us. The step of CRSS will encourage us. Asma Ali: Mr. Aimal, what about your studies for examinations? Aimal (Position holder): My routine was very simple, I used to strike balance in studies and other activities. For mental growth and sharpness, one needs to involve in extra curriculum activities like sports. During exam days, I would not read all the time and my learning technique was to understand the topic. Sohail (Position holder): I also studied according to timetable. I belonged to Khyber Agency, where military operations, insecurity and violence have become order of the day. Excessive power outage made our life miserable and I would sometime use mobile’s light for exams preparation. In 10th grade, I doubled my efforts to obtain maximum marks as in 9th my numbers were low than expectations. It is rather deplorable, neither political administration nor school administration appreciated us by giving any prize despite securing 1st position in the agency. In ninth grade, FATA secretariat announced Rs. 50, 000 as a reward, which I couldn’t receive so far. For the purpose, I waited for five days in Tehsildars office so as to allow me to meet the Political Agent, but I had the permission. Karishma (female student): From the very beginning, I have a distinction of securing first position in throughout classes. I accelerated my struggle for board examinations and maintained the norm of first position in the school. It is hard to maintain the success. I have grabbed 8th position in Peshawar board exams, which is result of mine parent’s prayers. Bushra (female position holder): A famous quote “Hard work is key to success”. Western education system completely defies our education system. There during annual board examinations, a student prepares his presentation before exam’s day and then present it before the teachers and students. They put their knowledge into practice. While our students memorize things irrespective they had understood the topic or not. Our students memorize so many books during exam’s day. It affects their mental and physical health as well as they does lack understanding regarding a topic. These monthly tests and annual examinations are to judge our memory capacity not intellect. Our memory is needed to be served in other field of interests as well, but we utilize it only for studies. We should avoid memorization by rut. My message to students they should clear their concepts and develop a sense of creativity in them and avoid copying and pasting as well. “Report:” In order to encourage competent students, prize distribution ceremony was held in honor of top ten position holder students of B.I.S.E 2012-13. The event was organized by a non-governmental and non-profitable organization Afaq, which is functional for growth of education in the region. Ayesha Uruj, who topped the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in SSC board examinations by securing 1000 marks out of 1050, shared her views that she will continue her efforts likewise. Ayesha Uruj: “I have set a goal in life and struggling for that, but I never imagined that I will become top student of the province. I avoid going to weddings, relative’s homes and other functions. I have devoted my whole time to reading books”. Reporter: more than 61000 students appeared in metric examinations out of which over 53000 candidates were declared successful whereas the ratio of success is about 69percent. Laila Noor hailing from Mohmand Agency, who secured 6th position in Peshawar board by obtaining 992 marks remarked. Laila Noor: “My success was consequence of mine parent’s prayers, teacher’s support and my personal efforts. I wished other girls of the agency may also work hard and to glorify the name of their agency. They should be given learning opportunities so as they show their hidden talent. Like Peshawar, maximum numbers of educational institutions should be opened in Mohmand so as the talent of our girls may not go spoiled”. Reporter: according to Peshawar board’s sources, over 33 thousand regular boys’ students took part in the exams whereas girls were round about 15000. From private education sector, 9500 boys and 2586 girls appeared in exams. M. Ikran Afridi: “I belong to Dara Adam Khel and I have obtained 988 marks. I supposed to secure 1st position however I couldn’t. I am in top ten students for which I am grateful to God. The environment is not conducive in our locality and still operation is going on. Female education is worse ever in the agency. My parent supported me by sending me to Peshawar to have a better future. There are many competent students, who do lack learning opportunities thus they couldn’t acquire education”. Reporter: Afaq organization’s representative Anwar Zaib expressed his views as under. Organization representative: “the main purpose of the event was to encourage our youth so as they may continue their struggle to achieve their destination. We want from these students to utilize their capabilities and talent for development of the province and FATA. We should focus on their attitudes and behaviors as well and not only to make them doctors and engineers rather there are numbers of fields where they can demonstrate their rich talent and tremendous potential”. Kamran Afridi CRSS Peshawar Khan Baba: If children belonging to tribal regions are given facilities like other children of cities, they can make wonders. Securing such huge numbers is manifest proof of their capabilities. Asma Ali: Mr. Sohail you belong to Khyber Agency. Do other students of the agency are also tended to education? Sohail (position holder): Like me, other children of Khyber Agency are also interested in education, but they are missing a conducive environment and facilities. My many class fellows bade good bye to education because of loadshedding and unrest. After results, one of mine friends phoned me and told me that you stood first in the agency, did you get anything from administration? My answer was nothing. Then he told me, that’s why he also does not take interest in education, because one will get nothing from it. Khan Baba: It is a wrong perception to gain education for any financial benefit, rather a person educates him/herself to be a good citizen and contribute to development and prosperity of the country. We should have no expectations from others. By getting good position in exams, one can seek admission in best college of the country. Saeed Afridi caller 1: I belong to Hayatabad, Peshawar, I would say literacy rate is less than 17% in Khyber Agency because the agency has been plagued by turmoil, conflicts and military operations, which are continued for last four years. The children of tribal belt are not less than any children of the country when it comes to talent and competency. Secondly education is slow moving, but a powerful force. It brings consciousness and knowledge and builds a good citizenship in the country. Asma Ali: Mr. Owais, what are your plains for future? Owais (position holder): I have applied only for Islamia College for higher education. I would say the education is to have positive approach towards different things. We want economic support, because the expenses of Islamia College are Rs. 50, 000 per student including hostel charges, which is unaffordable for us. Atleast top students should be given the facility of free education or scholarship. We have demanded this through print media. Aimal (position holder): Through scholarship facility, a student gets motivation. In order to get scholarship, I along with my friend went to concerned authority; they gave us surety that after one month of admission, you will get scholarship. I want to be engineer in future, but my parents are forcing me for medical. My sister is doing medical from Gomal University, I am interested in engineering. Government should focus on promotion of education in backward areas. Asma Ali: Karishma, why do some parents want their children to be doctors or engineers only? These kinds of parents don’t let their children decide for themselves, which leads them to be incapable for making their own choices. Karishma: I think parents should not force their children for a certain field. The interest of student matters a lot. Those students, who are forcibly entered to medical or engineering or any other field, they cannot excel. A person can reach to distinctive post by CSS or other competitive tests or they can enter army and lectureship etc. Bushra: Actually there is no concept of career counseling to know the interest of students from beginning. Through career counseling, they can opt for different fields. During a ceremony, I listened from a speaker, who said that when a person fails to quality medical or engineering test, he tried for CSS (Central Superior Services) and when appointed, he rules over doctors and engineers, however when he fails CSS exams then he joins politics and rule over the country. I want to become software engineer as most of the girls are ambitious for medical. First of all a person should be good human and then an all-rounder. Kamran caller 2: I am from district Charsadda, I am physically disabled, but I have enrolled my children in school. For development and a peaceful future of the country, we must educate our children. Government should assist poor and destitute persons so as their children may not remain illiterate. Asma Ali: What will be the future of those youth, who got average marks in inter exams? Khan Baba: If they will not concentrate on studies, they could not grab top slots/positions in public and private institutions and will remain on lower posts or they will open their businesses or will involve in laboring. Relief organizations should come forward for assistance of destitute children. Asma Ali: Bushra, what about career counseling in your’s schools? Bushra: I am from Peshawar Model Girl’s High School; there is service of career counseling. There a mindset of students is developed that what they want to be in future context. In that order, students are motivated for different fields of their interest. At metric level, teachers focused on our career counseling, but I think this had to be done from beginning. Owais: I am from Peshawar Public School where no such facility of CC is available though we were involved in debate competitions and other co-curriculum activates. Aimal: In addition to this I would say, state-run educational institutions are lying far behind private owned schools where even debate competitions and other extra curriculum activities do not organize on regular basis. Career counseling clears student’s mind that what is his field of interest for future. Karishma: I am getting education from district Charsadda. We must develop our mindset from the beginning that which field of study is suited to our aspirations and competencies. Career counseling service consists of a series of tests to evaluate student’s competency, skill and interest. The advisors will analysis and make recommendations on the best suited career for a student. Parents should understand and see the interest of their child. I cannot garn name and fame in a field for which I am forced rather I can excel in my field of interest. One of the reasons for poor performance of students is lack of respect to teaching profession as even in social gatherings, a student insult their teachers by doing their parody. They should be given that respect, which they deserve. Whatever, I am, just because of my teachers. I give whole credit to parents and mine teachers for my success. Khan Baba: It is said that in foreign countries little children are enrolled in playgroups. They have toys in the school to motivate them for education and know their preferences. ~~~Pashto Track~~~ Asma Ali: Mr. Sohail, would you like to convey your final message? Sohail: Youngsters should not waste their time by indulging in meaningless and purposeless activities. They should pay respect to their parents and teachers. Owais: Students should never believe in favoritism, memorization by rug or cheating in exams. They should have firm believe in God and hardworking Karishma: those students, who obtained low marks, they should struggle next time. It is said “failure is high way to success, failure is never permanent and success is never temporary, so don’t stop your effort until your victory makes a history”. Bushra: students should rely on concept’s clearance; it will make their way easy to study. We should perform our onuses with sincerity and dedication. Your intentions and destination should be clear and honest.
