*sets down a soapbox. Stands on it* I have a beef with a local business here in my town and I quite frankly Im tired of it. Every time I go in there, the staff is rude and seems unhappy to see me. While I am there, I feel like they want me to leave, and often its so uncomfortable that I leave as soon as I can. What is this awful place? Its my local library. Now, Im not a library hater. When I was in college, I loved the library. I would have moved in had they let me. Beth Rogers and the staff were always very welcoming and would always go above and beyond to help me. The library was a place that I could learn and unwind after a long day of labs or whatever it was. The library felt like home, and often I was very reluctant to leave when the time came. At my local library, its not like that at all. I asked to use the Internet for some research and they begrudgingly gave me at slip with at temporary wifi password and told me I had an hour. When I asked what happened if I needed more time she told me to come back later and shed let me use it again. I was the only person there. Every fifteen minutes this librarian would remind me how much time I had left on my wifi. Folks, Im a graduate student. I can barely get started in an hour. I started looking around at the walls and saw what had to be at minimum ten sheets of rules about being in the library. One sign said No cell phones. No instant messenger. No Facebook. Seeing as how my colleague and I communicating via Facebook and text, I could tell I wasnt going to get a lot done. About 45 minutes in, I felt so unwelcomed and intruding that I left, and unless something changes I wont be back. Libraries are not supposed to be like this. Libraries should be glad to see you and encourage your learning, not make it feel like a burden on the librarian. I would love to go down there and spend a few hours getting lost in local history books and working on my studies, but because of the way I felt today that is not going to happen. I hope it changes, for me and others like me *steps off soapbox. Picks it up and walks off*
