(this update is slightly late and should have been added last night, i.e. the 8th/9th August, but I recently changed my phone and forgot to add reminders and the like to the new one!) On this night, 72 years ago a maid called Johanna Mandale became the first person to be killed on Merseyside by the Luftwaffes raids. A stick of six bombs landed on the Prenton area, damaging properties in Acrefield Road, Burrell Road, Mountwood Road, Tower Road, Waterpark Road and Prenton Lane. Johanna came from Bromborough but worked for man called Mr Walter Bunny, who owned a department store in Liverpool. She was killed when a bomb crashed through the roof of his house (number 14 Prenton Lane) and exploded. She would be the first of nearly 4,000 people to die in the air raids on the region that would continue for more than a year and demolish large swathes of the Wirral, Bootle, Crosby and Liverpool.
