(to there is no sound to this) The Pioneers of Alaska unveil a bust of Felix Pedro (Felice Pedroni) in front of the Brooks Building at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The bust had been donated by the Italian government and was brought from San Francisco by the Italian consul general in 1952 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of gold near Fairbanks, Alaska. The following clips show unidentified prospectors posing next to the Felix Pedro monument by the Steese Highway near Fairbanks. The next scenes are from the rededication ceremony for the Felix Pedro monument on 7/22/1977. Many onlookers are dressed in period garb. This is followed by clips of a Felix Pedro look-alike leading a burro through the streets of Fairbanks and weighing a poke of gold at a bank in town. This also occurred on 7/22/1977 during the annual Golden Days Celebration in Fairbanks. The final shots are closeups of the Felix Pedro monument from the early 1960s. (Color / Silent / 16mm film) This sequence is an excerpt of AAF-1065, AAF-1077, AAF-6094, AAF-7973, and AAF-8629 from the Machetanz collection, KTVF collection, Clyde and Martha Dunlap collection, and the Pioneer Pete collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. For more information please contact the Alaska Film Archives.
