(warning graphic) To the person who hit the yearling elk on Mt Si Road, in front of Mt Si Stable tonight; Unless you are new here, or have only driven on Mt Si Road a few times, you should know that an elk herd lives there, and should drive slower, especially at night! If you were driving slower you would have seen the 20+ elk standing in the middle of the grass. It is a wide open area, no bushes or trees for them to hide behind, jump out and surprise you. When I ran out of the barn you were picking up the remains of the front of your bumper, jumped in and drove away. All the while no more than 5 feet from your car was a yearling elk with broken front legs. It was screaming for its Mom and herd that it has known all of its life because they were running away. I know you couldnt miss the baby floundering around trying to stand on its broken front legs. I realize that sometimes it is not anyones fault for hitting an animal, but It is cowardice to drive away and let it suffer till it died of a very painful death. If you didnt have a way of ending its suffering, call the sheriff! The sheriff will respond and put the animal out of its misery.
