“’God created man in his own image, in the image of God he - TopicsExpress

“’God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.’ Man occupies a unique place in creation: (I) he is ‘in the image of God’; (II) in his own nature he unites the spiritual and material worlds; (III) he is created ‘male and female’; (IV) God established him in his friendship. I. ‘In the Image of God’ Of all visible creatures only man is ‘able to know and love his creator.’ He is ‘the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake,’ and he alone is called to share, by knowledge and love, in God’s own life. It was for this end that he was created, and this is the fundamental reason for his dignity: ‘What made you establish man in so great a dignity? Certainly the incalculable love by which you have looked on your creature in yourself! You are taken with love for her; for by love indeed you created her, by love you have given her a being capable of tasting your eternal Good’ (St. Catherine of Sienna)” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part 1, Profession of Faith #355-356) Here the catechism gives us four attributes of man which it will expound on one at a time in the following paragraphs. The first attribute, we are created “in the image of God” is really the foundation of all the others. Of all the visible creatures on earth, we alone are able to come to know and love God. To know who he is and enter into a unique relationship with him, in which we are able to share “in God’s own life.” This is the very purpose of our existence and the reason that we all possess a great dignity. As Catherine of Sienna expresses, we are able to taste the “eternal Good” that is God himself. We taste this good when we come to know and love God. This reminds us that we will only come to experience the fullness of good and the purpose of our existence by seeking God in our lives and entering into the relationship that he is offering us. Without that relationship, we will never be satisfied, and with it, we will be satisfied for eternity!
