01/3/2015 I was with my friend Steve today having breakfast in the Italian Market. Anyway I was telling him about all the ways I save money. I honestly make a good living but Im very generous but frugal as well!!!! So we decided I should write a book... Well I decided to start and share some of my experiences on facebook...... 1. Buy your car used. And make sure you learn how to negotiate for one. (I always buy one a year or two old and save a bundle) 2. If you are able to Pay your auto insurance annually, instead of every six months. There’s usually a nice discount if you do this. 3. Carpool - I got this one when I was reading about online, but honestly I hate to car pool. Im to much of a control freak. 4. Keep your tires properly inflated. Not only do properly inflated tires save you money on gas, they also cut down on tire wear and improve the handling and thus safety of your car. 5. If your in Philadelphia and near the Italian Market at the end of the day the vendors leave produce out that in near expiration. They just leave it in front of the stands and the trash man take it at night. Now I know this sounds ridiculous, but produce is a fortune. Of course I do it with my hat on and a hoddie so my neighbors dont see me, but I dont ever buy produce anymore. Of course I only pick the produce that looks really good and pick only the stuff that looks safe. 6. Camp or if you dont like the outdoors rent a cabin. We live in PA. One of the most beautiful states in the U.S. (In my opinion) I love Central, PA and travel there and stay in a cabin Ill admit at least 3 or 4 x a year. I usually rent two bedroom cabins in Central, PA for like $40.00 a night. 7. Gift Cards - You can go on Craigslist under general and search for gift cards. All year round but especially people sell gifts cards that they received. I dont why? I guess that are not going to use it or theyre cash poor. I buy all sorts of gifts cards for restaurants, starbucks, target, etc. Ex. .Someone is selling a $100 Steven Starr gift card for $60.00. I would offer $50.00 and call it a day. I meet up with the person in CC and always call the 1 800 on the back of the card. It will automatically inform you of the cash balance so the dont get beat!!!!! 8. Gym - Join Planet Fitness... Its not a scam.. $10.00 a month.. (Im not kidding) $20.00 if you want to go to any planet fitness and not just the one you join. (I have the $20.00 membership) 9. Stop Smoking - I dont even know how much a pack a cigarettes is, but I know its not cheap.... 10. Drink more water. Water is free, and it’s good for you. Drink it instead of flavored beverages that cost money and its good for your wasteline. 11. Buy store brands. Here’s a secret that brand name companies don’t want you to know: sometimes generic brands are made at the very same factory as the brand name product, they just put a different label on it. 12. Call Comcast and negotiate. I dont know why but when I called them in 2014 to haggle all I had to do was add a home phone. This cut my bill by $40.00 Of course I never use the home phone if you bundle the package it saves you money. 13. Movies - Tuesday at the Rave in University City movies are $5.00 14. In 2014 I lost phone so many times that Verizon kicked me off the insurance. Instead of paying $300.00 buy a refurbished phone. I bought a great phone at 9th and South. I forget the name of the store, but it only sells refurbished phones etc. I think I paid $70.00 for a smart phone. 15. Unplug things... Whenever you leave a device plugged into a wall socket, it continues to constantly draw a small amount of energy. All those plugged in appliances can take a toll on your electric bill. . 16. (This one is good and I read about it online) Use compact fluorescent bulbs or LEDs. I include this suggestion rather begrudgingly. I’m not a fan of the light that CFLs or LEDs give off. It’s flat and reminds me of being in a hospital. Give me the warm glow of an incandescent bulb any day. But I can’t deny the energy savings of CFLs and LEDs. Although they cost a little more than regular bulbs, they last up to 10 times longer and use up to 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. 17. (Ill admit I read about this one on-line as well! Install aerating, low-flow faucets and shower heads to limit your water usage. 18. Make your own gifts or do what I do and buy gifts periodically through the year and put them in my birthday - Christmas closet. The week after Christmas you save a bundle. I also like to make personalized baskets. 19. Ive never done this but Ive recently heard people doing this. Offer to give a service, like mowing someone’s lawn each week for the entire summer instead of buying stuff. You can also put together a coupon book for someone close to you. 20. Use cash - You spend less... (I always use cash unless Im traveling) I dont keep any credit card debt. Love Joey
