Application Deadline: 2nd of December 2013 The New Zealand Government is pleased to advise that the second round of New Zealand Development Scholarships is now open and we invite candidates to apply for postgraduate study in New Zealand. Applications are invited from nationals of Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe to undertake short term postgraduate studies (Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas or Masters Degrees) of up to one year, commencing in Semester Two, July 2014, at Universities in New Zealand. The New Zealand Government provides New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) through the New Zealand Aid Programme within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The scholarships are available to eligible African applicants and will cover air travel, full tuition fees, an establishment allowance, and a living allowance to cover day to day costs in New Zealand. The NZDS scheme aims to strengthen sustainable economic development in Africa by contributing to human resource development particularly: Agriculture development and Renewable energy Information about courses available at selected New Zealand education institutes is provided : Postgraduate Programmes – Agriculture (PDF 254kb) Postgraduate Programmes – Renewable Energy (PDF 304kb) Type and level of scholarships NZDS are awarded for full-time, postgraduate level study (i.e. Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters degrees) in New Zealand. The types of course include: Semester-long Postgraduate Certificates, Year-long Postgraduate Diplomas in areas such as Agricultural Science, Water Resource Management, and Geothermal Energy, and Year-long Masters Degrees in subject areas such as Agri-Commerce, Resource Management, and Geothermal Energy. Eligibility To be eligible to be considered for a NZDS, applicants must: be a citizen of Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe (i.e. permanent residents of these countries are not eligible to apply); not have citizenship or permanent residence status of New Zealand or Australia or another developed country 1; not be married or engaged to be married to a person who holds, or who is eligible to hold, citizenship or permanent residence of New Zealand, Australia or another developed country; be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for one already commenced in New Zealand or another country2; satisfy the admission requirements of the New Zealand education institution at which the qualification is to be undertaken, including English language criteria; be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the public or private or community sector (as relevant), and to their home country’s development in general; and be able to take up the scholarship in the academic year for which it is offered. Application Procedure Application forms are available from the New Zealand High Commission (contact details are below). Please complete two (2) New Zealand Development Scholarship application forms and attach copies of current curriculum vitae, notarised/certified copies of university certificates, transcripts and three (3) reference letters, two (2) from academic referees and one work related, together with each application. All application forms must be completed in English and failure to do so will lead to automatic disqualification. All supporting documents must be translated into English by an accredited translator. A 500 word statement summary in English of reasons for wishing to undertake postgraduate training in New Zealand and how the postgraduate training being sought will benefit your country must also be provided. Applications are to be submitted to the New Zealand education institution of the applicant’s choice by 2 December 2013. Applications received by each New Zealand education institution by 2 December 2013 will be assessed based on the selection and eligibility criteria. The education institutions will forward complete eligible scholarship applications to the New Zealand High Commission in Pretoria for final assessment. All candidates will be informed of the outcome of their scholarship application by March 2014. Short listed candidates may be required to undergo a telephone interview. If offered a New Zealand Development Scholarship, travel to New Zealand is subject to a visa being issued by Immigration New Zealand.
