017-2014 January 26, 2014 GOVERNOR DE JONGH DELIVERS 2014 STATE OF THE TERRITORY ADDRESS MONDAY Governor John P. de Jongh, Jr. will deliver his annual State of the Territory Address before a formal session of the 30th Legislature on Monday, January 27, 2014. The session will be convened at 7 p.m. In his eighth and final State of the Territory Address to the members of the Senate and the people of the Virgin Islands, de Jongh is expected to review the advances made during the past seven years of his administration. He will review the challenges, particularly the financial challenges, which confronted the territory and how his administration addressed those challenges; his guiding the territory through the Great Recession; the success of the territory’s rum agreements and their significance to sustaining government services; tourism and re-establishing the identities of our towns. Governor de Jongh will spend some time on Monday night discussing the territory’s new economy; broadband network build out; business and economic development; public works advances; the post-HOVENSA era and efforts to secure a sale of refinery; as well as energy; education; emergency management; public safety; healthcare and hospital systems. He will also address the financial health of the Virgin Islands government as well as the current state of the Government Employees’ Retirement System; tax collection efforts and the rum cover over program. The State of the Territory Address will be aired on commercial radio and TV stations as well as by the Government Access Channels, Channel 6 on St. Croix and Channel 10 on St. Thomas-St. John.
