0300hrs report - Lost amongst the barrage of news one topic seems almost bland. Regardless, a key event in Canadian occurred yesterday. The Ontario Supreme Court sustained the Oath of Citizenship. Three people from as many countries refused to take the Oath because they alleged it infringed on their rights of free speech. ... In its rejection of the argument the court featured the argument, that I had made (not so subtle pat on back), which is that the plaintiffs demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of the nature and history of the Canadian government. The plaintiffs misunderstand completely, that in the Oath, the Queen is not just one individual. To be fair, many Canadian fall into the same boat. The Queen is a symbolic embodiment of all the people in Canada. ... There lies the gaping fundamental difference between the Republican system used in the United States, and the Canadian use of the Democratic Monarch system. In the United States the bicameral Congress represents and embodies the USA people. In the Canadian/British method, the Queen as figure head symbolically represents all the people. The elected Parliament answers to the Queen aka people. This is a fundamental difference. ... Now I am not saying one is necessarily better than the other. Thats not the topic anyway. Just an aside. Both systems are democratically sound. Each has its own advantages. The effectiveness of any political system depends on the participants. Factors such as honesty, sincerity, commitment, corruption, selfishness, selflessness, commitment, empathy and even love play a role. The levels of each lending itself to the democratic effectiveness of the individual elected and nonelected representatives. In other words, a democratic government or any government are only as good as the people running it. Good people translates to good government. Bad people evolves into bad government. ... Back to the topic. So these three seem incapable of understanding that basically the Queen is the avatar for all Canadians. Another point the Supreme Court of Ontario was trying to emphasize. I shall paraphrase the second fundamental judicial ruling to these poor deluded souls. The court supported the position of the vast majority of the citizens of any country one seeks to enjoin, and that is the very crass phrase... Our house. Our rules.
