05/03/2014.....4:03 p.m.......BREAKING NEWS!!!! Fighting in Recodo, Zamboanga City by ZCin2020 editor-at-large Juanito Delgado: A total of over 24 hours has elapsed but we hear no word from city mayor Beng Salazar on how she plans to resolve the problem in Recodo that has erupted into fighting and evacuation of residents from the area. Reports said Dacon employees fenced off a portion of an area occupied by people and residents in the area claiming the property belongs to them. Residents in the area claim that the area they occupy is covered by a proclamation issued during the Commonwealth regime. Those who opposed the construction of the fence conducted a rally Friday morning. They were driven off by armed guards of the company. The company also used firetrucks who sprayed water mixed with sand and gravel at the protesters. Armed guards also fired shots. This Saturday morning, the residents confronted anew the workers who were fencing off their area,,They simply want the company to leave open a space for them to get into the area or their homes. Instead company workers continued work and the confrontation continued. Explosions were heard and shots were fired. A certain Hamid Hamja died from bulletwounds fired from the direction of the company’s guard houses. Road traffic has been diverted via Tulungatung. Recodo is the gateway to Ayala where there are 13 sardine canneries operating 24 hours a day. Policeman and soldiers are in the area trying to pacify the parties involved in the violence. Radio reports mention some councilors who went there but no one reported if Mayor Beng Salazar visited the place. Residents have started evacuating the area. They must know something that the others do not know. The shooting and confrontation can escalate and more people will be forced to leave their homes. We will soon have a repeat of the Sept 9 incidents of chaos and disorder. And more money will be coming in to feed the evacuees.
