06 Sep 2013 5:57 AM AEST - WA cuts to impact children that need support most WA cuts to impact children that need support most Cuts to education in WA will impact children that need support the most, the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) says. ASG has more than 16,100 Member families in WA, and the cuts to education are concerning. ASG Member Ian Wray, from Perth, said the new WA model would have a detrimental effect, especially for children that needed additional support from education assistants. Mr Wray’s wife is an education assistant within the Perth Metropolitan area. While she’s been told her job isn’t affected, Mr Wray said the cuts to teacher aide jobs were concerning. “Those children that need the extra support will be the ones affected by this. “The state government is trying to balance the Budget at all costs, but it can have no other affect but a detrimental effect at a public school level.” While his two children go to private schools, Mr Wray has been on school councils in public schools and has also worked on a school-based policing program in the state. “WA had a good state model as it was; unfortunately it is trying to remove funding and positions which will severely impact WA in the long term.” ASG CEO John Velegrinis questioned whether the cuts would have been necessary if WA had signed up to the Better Schools Plan. “While the state’s model has similar principals to the federal plan, the cuts to jobs, education assistants and programs announced are a concern,” Mr Velegrinis said. “I fail to see how these cuts will improve education outcomes for students in the state. Every child deserves a quality education regardless of wealth, status or capability,” he said. ASG is passionate about education. For almost 40 years we have been helping create educational opportunities for families and children, by providing a range of resources and products. More than 509,000 children have been enrolled with ASG in that time and we have returned more than $1.8 billion in education benefits and scholarship payments to Members and their children. -ENDS- Media Contact: Rachael Fergusson, Media and Communications Coordinator, Australian Scholarships Group (ASG), 03 9276 7520 or 0448 167 578, [email protected]
