062114, Day 12 About 10 miles, Upper vidette mdw, up kearsarge pass, down to onion valley trailhead Hitchhiked with a fisherman/real estate guy to Independence Caught a ride in Rockoceans van for $40 donation to Bishop Super 8 Left camp at 8 am. A very cold morning as our camp was in the shadow of the morning sun. About a mile of downhill hike, we came upon a sign posted on a tree that for a Canadian Entry visa checkpoint. Several feet away, we see three flags hanging: US, Mexican, and Canadian. As we got closer, a largetarantula greeted us along with laaugter from a group of people hanging around a fire. We have come upon the trail magic center we have been hearing about from southbound hikers since yesterday. The Sierra sherpas, as they call themselves, served us cheese tortillas. We saw some people we met at Kennedy Meadows warming themselves around the fire. A few minutes later, a guydressed in a Royal Canadian mountee uniform. We sat around for a little while. Everytime someone arrives, they would cook up some more cheese tortillas. There was also some nutella and other goodies to partake. The Sierra sherpas hailed 120 pounds of food to provide this bit of trail magic to PCT thru hikers, as they knew that this was a point where they are almost surely out of food. lizpics2006.blogspot/2014/06/pacific-crest-trail-hike-2014-first.html
