08/25/2014: THE CRYSTALS - HE HIT ME (AND IT FELT LIKE A KISS) - Produced by Phil Spector, this Carole King and Gerry Goffin-penned song is The Crystals most infamous recording. Carole King was inspired to write this brutal song upon learning that her babysitter Eva Boyd, better known as singer Little Eva of Loco-Motion fame, was being physically beaten by her boyfriend. Barbara Alston again leads in, what would be, her last lead vocal recording on a single for the group. This song received some airplay, following its release that summer, but it was met with wide protests by audiences who felt that it promoted spousal abuse. Finally, bowing to the controversy that was aroused over the song, Phil Spector pulled the single before it could enter the music charts. [July 06, 1962] https://youtube/watch?v=f20Oz9Yr_So
