#1 - Moodymann Moodymann It goes without saying Moodymann stands as an establishment by himself. Along with Theo Parrish, another long-time Detroiter who released an LP this year, Moodymann helped define Dance music in the 90s by showing how Soul fits into the inherently mechanical house genre. The reason this record inspires me is nothing new from him; Moodymann’s innovative approach to combining performance, drum machines, samples and pop traditionalism, fleshing out his constructions as live funk edits, has more or less been his shtick from the beginning and is what he’s commended for. Unlike Parrish, whose cerebral séances often unflinchingly range through beat-less stratospheres, Moodymann is grounded in vocal melodies and a groove momentum that isn’t unlike disco’s. It just worked over and over again, despite the long runtime and frequent asides (in keeping with the Blaxploitation theme), and made this my favorite deep house album in 2014. From its wooziest smoke-filled corners, careless and stereotypically American, Moodymann was what was going on for me this year, for this point in my life, and that’s the right stuff in any style. https://youtube/watch?v=z_trFeBXW5c
